Solent | Ship Simulator 2008 | Features | Environments Cowes, Isle of Wight

The Solent area England

The Solent is a stretch of sea separating the Isle of Wight from the mainland of Britain. It is a great place for yachting. It is sheltered by the Isle of Wight and has a very complex tidal pattern. The ports of Southampton and Portsmouth lie on its shores. Spithead, an area off Gilkicker Point near Gosport, is well known as the place where the monarch reviews the Royal Navy. This stretch of water is amongst the most expensive waters in the world to cross by ferry.

The port of Marseille has historically been the port of the French Empire, linking the North African colonies of Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia with the French mainland. Today, the port stills plays an important role in Marseille, serving as both a commercial container port as well as a transport port for the Mediterranean sea. While the modern day port activities take place along the coast at the New Port, the Belgian Quay in the Old Port is used for the daily fish market, where the daily catch plays centre stage in Marseille’s culinary traditions.
